How to navigate end-point assessment

How to navigate end-point assessment

As your apprentice nears the end of their journey, it’s critical to understand the significance of End-Point Assessment (EPA). The EPA is the final hurdle for your apprentice to prove their skills and knowledge, and ultimately become a qualified professional in the lift and escalator industry. We explore the key points your apprentice needs to know to pass their EPA with flying colours.

  • Understanding End-Point Assessment (EPA)

EPA is the final evaluation conducted independently from the apprenticeship training. It assesses your apprentice’s competency in their chosen field and makes sure they meet the national standards required. The EPA involves various assessment methods, such as practical discussions, written exams and sometimes project work.

  • Prepare and plan ahead

Preparation is the key to success when it comes to EPA. As an employer, it’s your role to help your apprentice plan for their EPA. Make sure that they understand the assessment criteria and are fully briefed on what to expect during each assessment method. Creating a timeline for preparation and revision will help to alleviate any last-minute stress and boost their confidence on the day.

  • Practice makes perfect

Encourage your apprentice to practice honing their skills. Whether this is hands-on practice or mock exams, it will help to build their confidence and familiarise them with the assessment process.

  • Give feedback

The most powerful tool for improvement. Constructive feedback should be given throughout the apprenticeship. This should highlight their strengths and weaknesses – identifying areas for improvement. A positive and supportive environment will help them to grow and perform to the expected standard.

  • Showcase practical skills

Encourage your apprentice to showcase their skills confidently and professionally throughout the assessments. This is where mocks/practice scenarios can really help in preparing them for the real thing.

  • Seek support from mentors

Mentors should provide valuable insights and guidance to bolster their confidence. Ensure that your apprentice has time allocated each week/month to spend with their mentor.

Passing the EPA is a significant milestone in an apprentice’s journey. By understanding the process, practising diligently, and maintaining a positive attitude, your apprentice will be well-prepared to overcome this final hurdle and embark on a successful career in the lift industry.
